At first glance, it looks like regular black siding, but it’s actually charred wood, or Shou sugi ban (an ancient Japanese method of preserving wood). Not only is it beautiful, it creates a durable, chemical-free barrier that naturally repels water, rot, pests, and UV rays! And the best part for Wisconsin folks, it lasts even longer in colder climates!

We love when a design feature is just as functional as it is beautiful.

Unlike a regular wood burning fireplace, this masonry heater is built to store heat in its stone mass and slowly radiate warmth back into the home over 12-24 hours. It looks like a regular fireplace, but with a much more efficient and intentional design.

And the best part? This two sided masonry heater has a wood fired oven on the kitchen side and a cozy fireplace in the den/library on the other side. How neat is that!

Paired with ICF construction and strategically placed windows for passive solar heating, this home was designed to feel warm, comfortable, and inviting all year.
