Seaberry (also called Sea Buckthorn - not the invasive buckthorn) is a species we've been growing for awhile. It is a nitrogen fixer and it's fruit is both decorative and edible. Fruit persists into winter weather and is easiest to pick when frozen. Often referred to as "the Russian space secret" because it was used in their flights while we used a highly processed orange beverage called Tang in early space travel.

Our edible, hybrid chestnuts have been producing for a number years. They came from Badgersett Research which is now out of business. Starting in 2026 we should have small trees available from seed for those who want to experiment with their own edible forest.

Resting in the shade! The picture is of just a small number of plants that we will use to transform properties this year. There are hundreds of trees, shrubs and perennials going to new homes this season from our estate grown nursery right here in Central Wisconsin.

Commercial landscapes can produce benefits for people, the community and the environment! Business property landscapes that we design use sustainable and permaculture methods to meet parking lot screening requirements, but then produce dividends of fresh fruit for employees, plants for pollinators and good marketing vibes for the business owner who is committed to progressive environmental stewardship. Positive resource management on one of our landscapes recently produced a bonus of the spring delicacy pictured – morels! Eco-Building & Forestry continues to provide design and consulting anywhere and installation of eco-friendly landscapes in central Wisconsin.

Climate change can create opportunities as well as problems. I didn't expect to be doing plant nursery preparation the day after Christmas - seem unnatural! I was using my Dad's 1973 TroyBilt tiller for work that day.

Are you getting excited about spring planting? You can regenerate the soil in your yard and garden naturally and easily. The photo below is some of our squash harvest last Fall from a Hugelkultur bed. The area was layered in rejected soils, woody stems, branches and other organic materials and left to compost and decay for several years. I didn't need to water, fertilize or provide much care at all except for a fence to keep the deer out.
