A roofing contractor should always do three important things during an appointment. First, they should physically get on the roof and perform a real inspection instead of just looking from the ground. This allows them to properly check for damaged shingles, flashing issues, ventilation problems, soft decking, and any signs of leaks or storm damage. Second, they should take clear photos while they are up there and show them to the homeowner so you can actually see the condition of your roof for yourself and understand exactly what they found. Third, they should provide the estimate while they are there whenever possible, so you can ask questions, go over options, and make an informed decision without waiting days just to get basic pricing or information.

Ask the salesmen/or saleswomen if they make a commission. 90% should be on a commission structure. If they say NO.. that's a red Flag ❌🚩its a simple question for a simple answer.

Home in Macomb Township reached out after noticing multiple missing shingles and ongoing damage over time. After taking a look, it’s clear this one is headed toward a full roof replacement.

Before the homeowner spends thousands out of pocket, we’re taking the extra step to review the situation for a potential insurance claim. A lot of roofs we see in Macomb have damage that qualifies, but homeowners don’t always realize it.

Our goal is simple. Make sure every option is explored before anyone pays out of pocket.

If your roof has missing shingles, wind damage, or signs of aging, it’s worth getting it checked the right way.

We nailed down 4 different shingles and physically pulled them up to simulate wind lifting on a roof. Honestly? Most of them reacted pretty similar. Some had a little more resistance, some lifted easier, but none of them were magically “wind proof.”
Here’s the part homeowners usually don’t hear:
A roof system is only as good as the INSTALL.
You can buy an expensive shingle, but if the nails are too high, too low, overdriven, angled wrong, or missing the nail zone completely, that shingle can fail way earlier than it should.
Most architectural shingles are designed with a reinforced nail strip or “common bond” area. That’s the zone where the nails are supposed to hit so they go through BOTH layers of the shingle and lock everything together properly.
Then once the sun heats the roof up, the sealant strip activates and the shingles bond together. That seal is what helps resist wind uplift over time.
But if shingles are installed crooked, nailed outside the zone, or the seal never properly activates, strong wind can start lifting tabs and breaking seals.
That’s why installation matters just as much as the shingle brand itself.
A properly installed mid grade shingle will usually outperform a premium shingle installed poorly.
There’s no perfect shingle. There IS a right way to install one.
