Want tulips in April? The work happens in October. ๐ท
Spring bulbs need cold ground and enough time to root before it freezes, which in Westchester County means planting once the soil temperature drops but well before the first hard freeze. Go too early and they push top growth they cannot afford. Wait too long and they never establish.
Depth matters as much as timing. A good rule is three times the height of the bulb, pointed end up, in soil that actually drains. Bulbs sitting in wet clay rot instead of bloom.
We fold bulb planting into fall cleanup, so beds get cut back, fed and planted in one visit.
