This post has been a long time coming..! Kiawah River is a serene waterfront Community nestled into 2,000 acres on John’s Island SC. Underway since 2018, Kiawah River was masterplanned to weave around the abundant Live Oak Trees, Lowcountry Marsh land, and along the banks of the Kiawah River. The neighborhood features some significant amenities including a 100 acre working Farm, a Goatery, a 5-Start Auberge Hotel ( the Dunlin ), and hosted the 2024 Southern Living Idea House.

I’ve had connections since 2017, spent a period of time serving on the Kiawah River Architectural Review Board, and finally got connected to Jackson Built Homes for an opportunity worth the wait. I’m happy to present the “Wren” House, custom designed for a special lot in the Bell Cove enclave in Kiawah River. Inspired by Lowcountry Traditions, and modern living, with an extra helping of distinctive details. Meticulously built by Jackson Built Custom Homes, I couldn’t be more proud of my first contribution to Kiawah River..!

I’m very proud to have been the Architect on this stunning Sullivan’s Island house, built in 2020 by Alka Construction…! Dynamic Interior design by Regina Garcia Design. There is a lot of history and tradition on Sullivan’s Island ( going back 250+ years..! ). The design of this house borrows from this legacy while also aiming for a Coastal Timeless Modern character. And.., if anyone is looking, this house just recently hit the market, and can be yours..!!

I’ve had the honor to help brainstorm and envision two complete Streetscapes for an Urban Infill Development on the outskirts of Atlanta…! There’s some Timeless Traditional aspects. There’s some Hip, Funky, Contemporary Modern aspects. The goals: Compatible Variety, Material Authenticity, Humane Proportions, Distinctive Character, Timeless, Compact, Mixed-Use, Walkable, Permanent Architecture. It’s intended to be an Architecture that is both “Of our Time”, but also, able to stand the test of time..! It’s been a fun exercise, and I’m proud to share some drawings..!

I’ve been excited to share drawings from a recent Charrette for an Urban Infill Masterplan in Downtown Oklahoma City..! This is a Collaboration with the talented Brian Mork of StudioMork working on behalf of a visionary Client..! The goal is to create a walkable Mixed-Use Village with access to the bike trails along the Oklahoma River near Downtown. I look forward to sharing more as the project moves forward..!! Excited to share a new South Main House which has been in the works for a long time. This house provides a solid Anchor on an important and prominent corner in South Main..! It’s also the fruition of concept for this block which was in the works since before the Pandemic hit in 2020. The Original Concept was a 5-Unit Townhouse Block, all matching with River Rock Base, Reclaimed Brick, and Steel Balconies. When the Pandemic changed everything, the block was re-conceived as four separate detached homes, but keeping the concept of common materials.., ( fraternal quadruplets if you will..! ). Each ended up being customized with individual Owners. The intersection of Buzz Boulevard and South Main Street is a prominent one, and this house fulfills the goal of turning the corner with grace and elegance. A welcome addition to the South Main Neighborhood..!

Enjoyed a nice Labor Day weekend trip to Asheville NC…! It’s always been a favorite place for Architectural Inspiration… Shingle Style is one of my top favorite styles, and Asheville has it’s own distinct Asheville Shingle Style ..!! Enjoying a delicious Brunch , I was Inspired to work up a quick “napkin sketch” of an Asheville Shingle concept house..!! The Tower is a must to enjoy the marvelous Smoky Mountain sunsets..!!

I’m excited to share some “on the boards” Drawings for a new Neighborhood in Fayetteville Arkansas..! Adjacent to downtown, near the University of Arkansas is a beloved Nature Preserve called Markham Hill. The Developer helped to secure a 50 Acre Conservation Easement to permanently protect and manage the mature forest and history for future generations. Adjacent to Markham Hill a sustainably compact walkable Urban neighborhood is planned with a distinct Architecture concept..!

Modernism in single family homes is often “anti” traditional neighborhood, with emphasis on individuality over a cohesive streetscape. The directive at Markham Hill is to develop an Architectural Character that draws inspiration from the landscape, local materials, common threads, and the rich regional history of North West Arkansas. While also infusing human scale principles and proportions, attention to detail, and consideration for a walkable Urban Context.

My vision is for a Timeless Modernism, that is not placeless and arbitrary, but rooted in a sense of place, intertwined with the landscape, drawing from local traditions, simple, elegant and intentional. Welcome to Markham Hill..!

Excited to share the story of a recently completed South Main House…! This is a classic example of the versatility and potential of the South Main Style, and a Pattern based Traditional design approach. To maintain a cohesive neighborhood Character, there are certain essential “Common Threads” of the South Main Style, including Local River Rock, steep pitched Corrugated Metal roofing, vertically proportioned windows, a raised Urban street relationship. Beyond the essentials, I try to gather interesting family details and back-stories, that can inspire and lead to distinctive and unique design attributes. In this case, the Client had Dutch family heritage. But they didn’t want a masonry / Amsterdam Dutch aesthetic, they envisioned something more Craftsman, with siding and exposed beams/rafters… I did some research and discovered a historic Dutch colony in South America, in the Country of Suriname. Here the Dutch didn’t build in brick and masonry as in the Netherlands, or South Africa. Instead, they developed a unique Vernacular character with decorative porch beams, large multi-pane window, steep metal roofs, and uniquely expressed masonry foundations.

Challenge accepted..! With a defined program, the essential South Main Style patterns, and a treasure trove of inspiration from Dutch Suriname, I set out to design a house with a distinctly unique character, a fun back story, and a dynamic contribution to the South Main streetscape..!

I have had the honor to collaborate on the FIRST 3D Printed Home in Colorado…!! VeroTouch is an exciting start-up 3D Printed Home company bringing this exciting technology to Colorado. I had a chance to work in the early stages with South Main Developer Jed Selby, and VeroTouch co-founder Grant Hamel to elevate the design, and explore the possibilities of fusing Timeless Architecture with the burgeoning 3D printing technology…!

Colorado’s first-ever 3D printed home is also aspiring to take on Affordability challenges, and worked with the state’s Innovative Housing Incentive Program (IHIP).
