Yesterday marked a historic milestone for Rozema Boat Works as we celebrated the keel laying ceremony for the first United States Coast Guard Special Purpose Craft – Heavy Weather II, officially commemorating the beginning of production on this important vessel.
We were honored to welcome U.S. Representative Rick Larsen and Chief Warrant Officer 4 Beth E. Slade, United States Coast Guard, who were invited to weld their initials onto the keel—a time-honored tradition symbolizing the vessel's beginning and those who helped make it possible.
We also extend our sincere thanks to Rear Admiral Jonathan P. Hickey, United States Coast Guard, for speaking on behalf of the Coast Guard, President Dirk Rozema for reflecting on what this project means to our team, and U.S. Representative Rick Larsen for his remarks recognizing the importance of this partnership.
We were also honored to welcome Zachary Heffron, Northwest Washington Outreach Director for the Office of U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, who attended the ceremony on the Senator's behalf.
“Washington’s maritime economy, coastal communities, and maritime workforce depend on the Coast Guard operating in the toughest conditions,” said U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell. “After authorizing the Special Heavy Weather surf boat program and securing funding for the first two boats, I’m proud to see these boats being built at Burlington’s Rozema Boat Works. They will give the Coast Guard the tools it needs to save lives, protect mariners, and keep commerce moving while supporting Washington workers and strengthening America’s shipbuilding industry.”
This contract represents an exciting new chapter for Rozema Boat Works. We are proud to partner with the United States Coast Guard to build the next generation of Special Purpose Craft, designed by Camarc Design. We look forward to delivering a vessel that will serve those who protect our nation's waters for years to come.

New Rozema designed 47’ x 16’ Crab Boat. This vessel will be powered by twin John Deere 6090’s at 550 HP each, with estimated top speeds of 24 knots. The back deck will carry 150 crab pots with enough room in the fish holds for 14,000 lbs of crab. Scheduled to be delivered in the fall of 2022.
