This Old House has an interesting article on any home improvement you may be thinking about by making sure you have a plan w/ several options or having a "wishlist" before shopping for a contractor. No plan is perfect. Materials aren't perfect. Installers aren't perfect. Don't go into any project thinking you're any different than the millions before you that have experienced compromise w/ their project(s).
