For 13 years the Maxwell utility substation in California struggled to provide consistent power to its customers after starlings had taken up residence in their facility.

13 years of intermittent power outages, equipment failure, and hazardous conditions for employees.

Because of birds.

Biologists tried different methods to safely deter the starlings away from the substation, and nothing worked.

Acting on a tip from an Environmental Protection Specialist, the biologists contacted BirdBuffer to show them how our system uses methyl anthranilate to safely deter birds.

After installing three BirdBuffer units at the substation, we were able to not only deter the migrating starlings from overrunning the substation that season, but we also continued to reduce their presence each year.

Since the installation of the BirdBuffer units, there have been zero bird-related power outages, and the capacitor banks, insulators and other substation equipment no longer require frequent power washing to remove bird f***s.

The BirdBuffer solution was a success, came in under budget, continues to prevent outages and save time and money for Maxwell Substation. The reduction of unplanned power outages, increased safety for their staff, and humanely removal of the birds, has been a victory for all involved.

What do bird lovers think? Do we hate birds?

I have a friend who LOVES birds. She loves sitting on her deck watching birds, investigating new species she sees.

She thinks I hate birds since I work here at BirdBuffer.

I always tell her the same thing: we love birds, just not their mess.

The Scientific American wrote an interesting article last week reveling in the delight that is bird watching.

They also lay out a clear case for the problematic nature of invasive birds that cause millions of dollars of damage each year.

"Because of their invasive status, and the agricultural, ecological and economic issues [starlings] cause, they are either ignored or downright hated, especially by bird-lovers who are “in the know.”"

Even bird lovers agree – invasive, pest birds are a problem.
