Winter will eventually loosen it's grip on the area, eventually.

While your lawn will look terrible, it is not dead, it has been in an incredible hibernation.
Start by removing all debris and leaves, think about adding grass seed and soil to bare areas and where mice and voles have tunneled.
Schedule a lawn aeration that will open the surface to allow water, fertilizer and nutrients to your lawn.
Dethatching tears up your lawn, and afterward, repair is then needed with reseeding.
Turn your lawn like a garden with aeration, and then seed and soil to have a thick lawn this year.

Finally!!!! Winter will be releasing its grip on our area later next week with highs in the 40's and lows above freezing.
As the ground thaws, now is a great time to aerate your lawn, open the surface to reduce run-off, hold your moisture, and allow your fertilizer to get to the roots of your lawn.
