The pool was already there. The patio just wasn't doing it justice.

A round above-ground pool doesn't need to look like an above-ground pool. It needs a paver surround that treats it like the focal point it already is. Curved multi-color pavers, a contrasting soldier-course border to define the edge, boxwood hedges tying the planting bed together. Same pool. Completely different backyard.

This isn't a "stack some blocks and call it a wall" situation.

If your backyard currently qualifies as a ski slope, this is what turns it into usable space; engineered segmental block built to hold back real elevation, not decorative.

Quick truth: most wall failures aren't a block problem, they're a drainage problem. Get water management and grade right, and the wall does its job for decades.

Steep lot, wasted yard, "we were told it's not buildable" is usually where we're just getting started.

Grill's the star, but let's talk about what's holding it up.

Full brick outdoor kitchen, stone slab counter, built-in stainless fridge, enough burner power to feed the whole cul-de-sac — set into a paver patio that stretches out to a lounge area most people would call "the whole backyard." We just call it Tuesday.

This is what happens when a patio isn't an afterthought. Kitchen, seating, hardscape designed as one space, not three separate projects duct-taped together.

A wall this long has one job: hold the grade so the yard behind it stays flat and usable instead of slowly rejoining the slope above it.

But a wall alone creates a new problem, now there's a wall between you and the high ground. So we built the access in from day one: matching stone steps set right into the retained slope, same materials, same install.

End result: more flat yard than you had, and you didn't lose the hill behind it , you just got a way up.

When your retaining wall needs a retaining wall. Every hillside needs something doing the actual structural work, holding back the earth, taking the load, keeping your yard from becoming a landslide. But structural doesn't mean pretty. Most of these walls look exactly like what they are: engineered, functional, and ugly.

So we built a second wall. Not for the soil but for the eyes. A clean, defined edge that gives your backyard an actual boundary instead of a view of shotcrete and rebar.

The dirt doesn't care what your yard looks like. You do. Now both problems are solved.

Most backyards have a patio. This one has an entrance.

Stone stairs and pillars leading down into a full paver patio, a built-in outdoor kitchen along one side, curved retaining walls tying the grade together on both ends. It doesn't feel like an add-on. It feels like it was always supposed to be here.

That's the difference between a project and a plan.

Railroad ties look rustic in a backyard. What they actually are is decommissioned railroad infrastructure, soaked in creosote which is a chemical the EPA specifically says shouldn't be near kids' play areas. It's not code-compliant landscaping. It's recycled industrial waste that happened to be cheap.

These homeowners had one holding their backyard together installed by the builder, and a toddler who couldn't get enough of climbing it. Every summer the smell showed up before you even walked outside. It got on clothes. It got on hands.

We pulled it out completely and replaced it with a tumbled stone wall and capstone that was built to last with nothing in it that requires a warning label.

Rustic is a look. It shouldn't be a health risk.

There's a reason this backyard gets used every single day instead of just on weekends when the weather's nice.

We didn't just drop in a patio and call it done. New stairwell, a balcony, garden beds that actually have some depth to them, turf that stays green without a sprinkler system running your water bill up. It adds up to a space that feels like an old courtyard; the kind you'd stumble into and not want to leave.

Small yard. Big difference in how you actually live in it.

Not every yard hands you a flat, open canvas. This one in Nashville's Nations neighborhood had a grade, a tight footprint, and a carport that needed to be part of the story.

So we carved it out. Dropped the grade, built the retaining walls to define the space, laid the paver patio, and connected it all back to the carport with a curved walkway that makes the whole thing feel designed instead of squeezed in.

Tight spaces don't have to mean compromises. They just require a better plan.

Most patios get packed up when the temperature drops. This one doesn't.A dedicated fire pit area changes the math on how long your outdoor space actually gets used. When November hits and everyone else is heading inside, this backyard is just getting good. We extended the patio, defined the space with a contrasting border, and anchored it with a circular fire pit built for the nights that call for a little warmth.Same backyard. Longer season.
