10 things to keep in mind as colder weather approaches:
1. Don't forget to turn off outdoor faucets and disconnect hoses.
2. Know where your shut off valves are and test them regularly.
3. Turn off and drain your automatic water sprinkler systems.
4. Create a very slow drip with the faucet farthest from where your water enters your house.
5. When thawing pipes always remember slower is better.
6. If leaving home keep thermostat above 65.
7. Use a hair dryer to thaw frozen pipes as blow torches are a fire hazard.
8. Open cabinet doors under your sink at night to allow the warm air from the house under there.
9. Apply heat tape or thermostat controlled heat cables around the pipes that are exposed to weather.
10. Seal up your doors and windows and keep that heat inside the house!
