8 Reasons to Replace Older HVAC Systems

Your home’s comfort lies in your most expensive appliance: your HVAC system. It keeps you warm in the winters and cool in the hot summers. If only it could last forever, but unfortunately, the time will come when old HVAC systems need replacement. How do you know when it’s time, and why should you replace it?

Your HVAC System is More Than 10 Years Old

The average lifespan of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years, but as these systems age, they tend to get less efficient. If your HVAC is over 10 years old, consider replacing it with a more energy-efficient unit, such as one that has earned the ENERGY STAR label. These high-efficiency units can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs. Repairing an older system also gets more costly and doesn’t guarantee life extension of the system.

Your HVAC System Needs Frequent Repairs

If your HVAC system seems to be steadily declining and requiring frequent repairs, you’re constantly replacing parts, or the same problems keep arising, it may be time to replace your system. An older system that requires repairs is probably becoming less efficient. And, if you haven’t noticed it already, your energy bills will start getting more expensive.

Your HVAC System Has a Major Breakdown

If your heat exchanger, compressor, or motor fail, replacing these with new components could cost several thousand dollars including labor fees. If your system has a major breakdown or needs a major repair, the better option is to simply replace the system.

You’re Not Comfortable in Your Home

If you notice some rooms in your house are too hot and at the same time other rooms are too cold — or if your home never gets warm or cold enough — you may have a problem with your HVAC system. It could have been improperly installed, or it could be the wrong size. If your system is already nearing 10 years of age, it might be best to replace your old system with a new, more efficient system rather than deal with years of discomfort down the road.

Your Heating or Cooling System is Noisy

Loud noises could be a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment. Your local Axberg professional contractor can help you decide whether this is a fixable problem or if it’s time to consider replacing your older system.

Your Air Conditioner, Furnace, or Boiler is Running a Lot

If it seems like your HVAC is running more than usual, it may be a sign it needs replacing. A heating unit that is constantly running is going to be the biggest energy user in your home, so make sure to keep an eye on how often it runs.

Older Systems Can Allow Carbon Monoxide Into Your Home

Older furnaces are at risk of getting cracks in their heat exchangers, which could allow carbon monoxide to leak into your home. As the system gets older, there’s a higher chance of corrosion causing a crack to form. A carbon monoxide detector is the only way to tell if your system has a leak.

Older Systems are More Likely to Have Electrical Issues

Older HVAC systems are more likely to short out. This could result in your heater quitting in the cold Illinois winters or worse, an electrical fire. Regular tuneups are important to stop this from happening and extend the life of your HVAC system. But, after 10 years of age, it’s a good idea to upgrade your system to play it safe.

Just because your HVAC system reaches 10 years of age doesn’t mean you need to run out and replace it right away, but it is a good time to start thinking about a new system. At any age, it’s a good idea to get regular tuneups to keep energy bills low and extend the life of your system. We at EASE know how important it is to have a safe, efficient, and fully working HVAC system when the cold Illinois winters hit. Give us a call at (866) 788 3273 to talk about our regular maintenance services or a new HVAC system when the time comes. We have affordable prices and financing available.
