Happy National Rocky Road Day! Although the day may *technically* be dedicated to the dessert flavor, we'd like to take this opportunity to also celebrate Rocky Road Lawncare. Like the 1850s Australian dessert, and the following 1929 ice cream flavor, you're in for a sweet experience when you work with Rocky Road Lawncare! It may not have chocolate, nuts, or marshmallows, but could a picturesque lawn get any sweeter? 🌱🍨

Did you know that most insect problems occur from late spring to early fall? Grubs and Chinch bugs start doing damage in June and continue through August. Since Chinch bugs feed by sucking the fluids out of turf foliage, you can detect them by inspecting the turf bordering dead grass patches. Another method of detection is to remove both ends of a large can and place it a few inches in to the soil and fill it with water. Chinch bugs will float to the surface within 10 to 15m minutes.
You can address Chinch damage by planting or overseeding resistant grasses (i.e., grasses containing endophytic fungi) and irrigating droughtstressed turf.
You can also control the infestation with insecticides containing pyrethroid compounds, which are effective at controlling chinch bugs when they are actively feeding.

It's mid-April, and the perfect time to mulch your landscape trees! Proper mulching can improve soil moisture, structure, fertility, aeration, and temperature. Here is PennState Extension's Proper Mulching Method:

β€’ Organic mulches are preferable due to their soil-enhancing qualities. Hardwood bark makes very good, inexpensive mulch, especially when it contains a blend of bark, wood, and leaves.

β€’ Mulch can be applied to landscape trees at just about any time of the year. However, the best time to apply mulch is in the middle of spring, once soil temperatures have warmed enough for root growth to begin.

β€’ Mulch as much of the area as possible, preferably to the outermost edge of the tree's canopy, referred to as the β€œdrip line." Keep in mind, the drip line moves out as the tree grows.

β€’ Apply a 2- to 4-inch layer of organic mulch and no more; use less if the soil is poorly drained. More than 4 inches may harm the tree's root system. If using finely textured or double-shredded mulch, use 1 to 2 inches since these materials allow less oxygen through to the root zone.

β€’ For tree health, keep all mulch material away from the trunk. Allow the root flare (where the trunk meets the soil) to show. The root flare is at or near the ground line and is identifiable as a marked swelling of the tree's trunk where roots begin to extend outward.

If the ground's NOT frozen, you can still fertilize your grass, even if it's dormant - ideally when the weather is around the 50s (which is coming sooner than you think!)

Most fertilizers will include NPK- or Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. Keep an eye on these chemical percentages to optimize your grass feeding.

Here's a handy guide for what each chemical does:

Nitrogen (N)
For vigorous growth and to produce green grasses and other plants... Too much nitrogen causes flowering and fruit-bearing plants to focus on leaf growth. High Nitrogen fertilizers are useful in the early months useful for young plants.

Phosphorus (P)
For root, flower, fruit and seed development. Encourages nutrient efficiency in plants. Low phosphorus levels will leave your roots and leaves weak and vulnerable.

Potassium (K)
For improving overall growth. It regulates root and leaf growth, keeps plants healthy and improves color and taste in fruits and vegetables. High Potassium fertilizers have the most visible impact on plants. Feeding potassium to flowering trees and shrubs will result in more flowers.

Have you gotten attached to your Christmas tree? Will your house seem empty without a beautiful pine tree in January? Never fear! You can actually have a potted conifer tree in your house year-round!πŸŽ„
The easiest indoor conifer to grow is the the Norfolk Island Pine. They need a min. of 45Β°F, plenty of bright indirect light, and good soil drainage. Make sure to keep your pine away from heating vents too!

The leaves are starting to change, making it a great time to start strategizing your fall lawncare! Here are some tips for leaf cleanup:

1.) Wait until your trees are almost bare- no sense raking multiple weeks in a row when you can just get it all done in one fell swoop!

2.) Use tarps! Rake your leaves onto a tarp and then just scoop it up by all four corners to transport the leaves! You can fit a lot more leaves onto a tarp than in a wheelbarrow, and this way they won't blow everywhere when you transport them.

3.) It can be good for your grass to mow over fallen leaves! The mulched leaves can help feed your grass. Make sure to do this when there's a thin layer of leaves on the ground. Mowing over too many leaves can just cause a mess and suffocate your grass.
