Where you already spend time in your yard decides your outdoor structure more than your taste does.
The layout of the space makes the call. Style comes after.
An attached structure connects to the house and uses its wall as one of its supports. It reads as an extension of the room behind it and keeps the walk between indoors and out short. For a patio that already sits off the back door, like the covered patio pictured here, it's the natural fit.
What it gives up is reach. Its position is set by the house, so it covers the space beside the wall and nowhere else.
A freestanding structure stands on its own posts and can go anywhere in the yard. We build freestanding gazebos to cover outdoor kitchens or bars, or to create a shaded space next to a pool. It suits the homeowner whose favorite spot is out in the yard. The trade-off is that it borrows nothing from the house and sits a short walk from the back door.
Pergolas come both ways, attached to the home or freestanding in the yard. They give partial shade and do not keep out the rain, so they suit a space meant for open air.
Autumn is the planning season for next year's outdoor projects. Start with one question: where do you already gather? A patio off the kitchen door and a pool deck across the lawn point to different structures. Answering that first makes every later choice simpler.
The yard decides first. Style follows.
