These are the before and after photos of a deck and staircase makeover we recently completed in Garden City. After replacing all the stair stringers, framing on the lower platform, and joists on the upper deck, we covered everything with composite decking, vinyl railings, and black balusters. Some thought and fabrication was needed to make the railings interact with the existing construction. It came out really nice.

These are the before and after photos of a nice little deck project that Mike K***a just completed. The old one was sagging and the stairs were unsafe.

The new deck was expanded to 8ft x 8ft. It is supported on 9 posts, concreted into the ground, and framed in 2x10, 14 inches on center. Mike used our signature cocktail railing with a 2x6 top. This allows the client to set plates or plants etc. on top. We like this design because it is secured by wrapping the outsides of multiple posts. This is much stronger than securing between the posts, and will withstand the occasional dispute, or desire to walk on top of it. The deck boards are picture framed for a professional appearance. All new hand cut stair stringers sit on a poured slab instead of dirt. (That's why many staircases sag). And there is no bottom rail for water to sit and rot the bottoms of balusters.
The handrails are fabricated and routered to code. He capped the sides with deck boards and included an access door for underneath.

These are the photos of a 16ft x 14 1/2ft pergola we just built in Carolina Forest. The client had a nice patio that couldn't be used much due to the powerful mid day sun. We hand build these on site to fit the space. A pile of lumber gets delivered and we carve and notch everything ourselves. This one includes routered anti sway bracing, baseboards, a ceiling fan mount, and black structural brackets. It provides 70% shading which translates into a cool space to hang out.

On another note, we want to endorse our friend Ryan Ewalt, who has just started his own pest control company, after over 10 years with another firm. He grew up in the area. This is a ground level composite deck project that Mike K***a just completed in Pawley's Island. We built the elevated deck last year. The clients wanted a larger patio area. Much earth was removed so the structure is supported on concreted posts, rather than sitting in dirt. Everything is held together with deck screws, structural screws, and metal joist hangers. Joist tape was applied to help preserve the framing. The beams are capped and the deck boards are picture framed to eliminate unfinished edges. We also fabricated a lockable access door that matches the side of the house.

Here are the before and after photos of a deck we recently replaced in Surfside Beach. The old one had seen better days. We replaced all the framing with 2x10, and dug all new footings. The staircases were reconfigured wider and shallower, with a concrete slab at the foot of each one. The deck boards are picture framed. This client wanted to hang a sunshade so we left 3 posts long and added a triangle to keep them in place. The sides are capped with deck boards rather than lattice. We fabricated these custom, graspable, "to code" handrails. A hinged and latched access door was installed. The project was finished off with a face lift on the lawn well box.

These are the before and after photos of a wraparound composite deck we recently replaced in Murrells Inlet. The old framing had become rotted and was sagging. We redid it in 2x10 with new posts and footings, tighter on center to accommodate composite decking. Everything is picture framed and capped to eliminate unfinished edges. The stairs were reconfigured wider and shallower with hand cut stringers for an easier traverse.

Behold, our latest backyard makover, completed yesterday in Surfside Beach. First up is a 12'x12' pergola over the hot tub. It provides 70% shading and a ton of ambience. We coupled that with a ground level deck and a wraparound tree bench. The clients wanted a nice shaded area where their family could gather and sit during visits.
Pavers were removed to set the pergola in concrete footings. We start with a pile of lumber, and everything is hand carved and notched on site. This is our 1st tree bench. It is free standing, not attached to the tree. We gapped it snug but cantilevered the top boards over the framing a few inches. This way if the mature tree continues to grow, and touches the bench, you just run a jig saw around the tree to re-gap it. The deck and bench boards are picture framed for a finished appearance. The black structural/decorative brackets really dress up the pergola.

These are the before and after photos of 2 staircases we just rebuilt in Surfside Beach. Permitted and Inspected. The old stairs were sagging and were originally built with a couple falling/tripping hazards, which we alleviated. The clients liked the existing railings, so we retained them and fabricated graspable hand rails. All new stringers were hand cut, and a concrete slab was poured at the bottom of each flight. We reconfigured the front stairs and added balusters and a 2nd hand rail to the back stairs. Me and my son do all the work. I know we dont look like much, but our work is excellent. And, like they say on that old sitcom, "If women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy."

These are the before and after photos of a permitted facelift we just performed in Surfside Beach.
First we replaced the aged back staircase and added a 15'x4' platform using composite decking. Everything is legit, framed in 2x10, structural screws, lots of concrete, joist hangers, joist tape, picture framed boards, and a concrete slab at the foot of the hand cut stair stringers.
We also replaced the front step, and added a concrete slab for an easier traverse from the driveway.
Finally, a new composite ramp leading into the shed.

These are the before and after photos of a beautiful project we completed yesterday. We refurbished the staircase and landings and built a bar underneath. All new stair stringers were hand cut. Their number was increased from 3 to 5 for added strength. Framing was beefed up where needed, with extra stringers, joists, metal joist hangers, and structural screws. The product is Stone Grey Veranda composite decking. It's attractive, not too dark, and we have had really good luck with it. The landings and stairs are capped for a finished appearance. The landings are picture framed. The bar is framed really sturdy and secured to the house posts in case a guest wishes to dance on it. Finished in T-111 plywood with dual 2x12s for the top.
The last step is staining once it dries out.
