Sewer Roots at the Worst Possible Spot 😬

Groton, Connecticut sewer camera inspection. This 6-inch clay sewer line has no roots throughout the entire pipeline, except for the last two joints right at the city connection under the road.

Unfortunately, that’s about the worst possible spot for them.

Lining is still the smarter option, but this one takes some serious precision. We have to stop that liner right on the money at the city connection. Shoot it a little too far, and now we’re hanging into the city sewer.

The alternative is digging up the road, which could easily cost double to triple what it costs to rehabilitate the pipe with a liner.

Difficult install or not, we’ll always do everything we can to get the job done right and save our customers money whenever possible.

Be Careful Who You Hire

After unclogging this main sewer line in New London, CT, our camera inspection showed heavily rusted, scaled, deteriorated cast iron that was actively flaking apart.

A lot of drain cleaners will sell you on aggressively cleaning a pipe like this with jetting or milling. But if that thin, deteriorated pipe doesn’t survive, they can walk away and you’re left with holes, cracks, or even sections where the bottom of the pipe is completely missing.

Think of an old rusty tin can buried in the yard. Now try stripping all of that rust off with an electric wire brush or any other power tool you can think of. What do you think might happen?

People think experience is knowing how to clean a pipe. Real experience is knowing when not to clean one.

Sometimes integrity means telling the customer something they may not want to hear because it’s the right thing to do.

If we’re lining the pipe afterward, absolutely clean it properly and strip 100% of the rust and scale off. If not, getting it flowing and leaving it alone can be the safer move for the customer.

Mystic, Connecticut 📍

This sewer trap was completely hidden under a carpeted basement floor with no visible access.

Knowing the neighborhood and these older homes, I suspected exactly where it was. One boxed-out section of wall and a quick tap on the floor confirmed a hollow trap pit underneath.

We found it fast, cleaned the line, got everything flowing, and provided a camera video and estimate for permanent repairs.

A little sewer repair in Noank, Connecticut.

This customer had an old, rusted sewer trap buried underground beneath their front porch. We dug it up, chopped the old trap out, installed a straight section of PVC, and the problem was solved.

🚨 BROKEN SEWER PIPE REPAIR IN GROTON, CT 🚨

We got the call late yesterday for a clogged/broken sewer pipe and gave the customer our first available appointment — first thing this morning.

You Never Know What You’ll Find Underground!

We’re in Norwich, Connecticut rerouting a sewer line, and to our surprise, we uncovered an old stacked natural-stone well that nobody knew was there.

So what do you do when an abandoned well is directly in the path of your sewer work? For us, there was one solution: fill it in and keep moving.

We completely filled the old well with rock and stone, creating a solid area to continue our work. These old wells simply collect groundwater from the surrounding water table, so filling the open void with stone doesn’t eliminate the groundwater—it’s still naturally present underground.

Once it was filled and stabilized, we continued rerouting the sewer line like the well was never there.

This job is never boring. No matter how much you plan, there’s always a chance you’ll uncover something nobody knew existed.

TRADE TIP: SOMETIMES YOU CAN AVOID PULLING THE URINAL

We were in Groton, Connecticut cleaning a clogged urinal, and before pulling it off the wall, it never hurts to try one little trick first.

Urinal augers exist, but in my experience, they literally never work. The clog is always in the drain pipe beyond the urinal itself.

Sometimes we’ll use a small drain snake—the same type we use for bathtub drains—and carefully work it through the urinal. Maybe 25% of the time, we can actually reach the clog and save ourselves from having to remove the urinal from the wall.

This time? Total failure. 😂

We gave it a shot, but the urinal still had to come off the wall so we could properly access and clean the drain line.

Sometimes the little tricks save you a bunch of work. Sometimes they don’t. That’s the trade!

A Little Trick of the Trade in Hartford, Connecticut

Here’s a short clip of me spraying water directly down a main sewer line using the toilet supply line.

Why do we do this? It allows us to test the line and make sure water is flowing properly without having to reinstall the entire toilet first.

It’s a simple trick, but it saves time and lets us confirm the sewer line is flowing the way it should before putting everything back together.

One of the many little tricks of the trade you pick up over the years.

Jetting a Urinal in Groton, Connecticut

This one was nasty.

We had already finished jetting the drain piping inside the building, but before reinstalling the urinal, we decided to take it one step further and jet the actual fixture itself.

As you can see in the video, the urinal was removed from the wall and brought outside so we could blast out the remaining urine scale and mineral deposits that had built up inside the fixture.

There was a significant amount of buildup—not just in the piping, but inside the urinal itself. This final step was absolutely necessary to make sure we weren’t leaving anything behind that could contribute to another blockage.

When we clean a drain, the goal isn’t just to get the water moving again. We want to clean the system as thoroughly as possible.

STONINGTON BOROUGH WILL TEST YOU.

Working in Stonington Borough can be tough. Narrow roads, tight properties, buried sewer traps, and sometimes absolutely no way to get excavation equipment where it needs to go.

That was the case on this Saturday call. The sewer trap was buried several feet deep with no access, and after spending hours trying to dig it up by hand, I had to change course.

I threw everything I had at the clog, and eventually our high-velocity water jetter blasted through it and got the sewer draining again. It hit so hard one of the gauges on the machine actually blew apart.

Gauge destroyed. Sewer flowing. Successful Saturday.

We were able to get the customer back up and running and provide an estimate to return and properly excavate the buried trap.

I take a lot of pride in serving Stonington Borough. Where other companies may avoid difficult situations, we seek them out. The challenging jobs are what make us better.
