Some materials are better for having lived a little. Stone gathers lichen, timber softens, metal develops a patina and gravel settles beneath fallen leaves.

Weather, time and the changing seasons leave their mark, allowing materials to become part of the landscape rather than simply sit within it. Because sometimes, the best finish is the one nature adds itself.

Room to breathe. At Head of Plains, generous lawns weave between the architecture while grasses and coastal planting bring movement to the edges. Expansive yet intimate, orderly yet loose, the landscape finds its beauty somewhere in between.

Along the water’s edge, the first lines of this project began to take shape, establishing the relationships between land, architecture and water that would define the finished landscape.

A quieter rhythm settles over the landscape. As reeds sway at the water’s edge and migrating birds begin their journey south, the sounds and movement of fall take over.

Fall arrives in layers on Nantucket where green softens to gold, leaves turn amber overhead, and grasses dry to warmer tones. The lower light casts its own color across the landscape and the shift changes not only how a garden looks, but how it feels. Some of the most beautiful moments in a landscape come from simply letting the seasons take their course.

There’s an intimacy to a smaller landscape, where every path, planting bed, and gathering place becomes part of the experience.

At Hedgebury Heights, lush planting wraps around spaces for dining, lounging and swimming, blurring the edges and creating a garden that feels generous and deeply connected. This is a space designed for long afternoons by the pool, dinners that stretch into the evening, and everything in between.

Fall reveals a different side of the landscape. As growth slows, structure comes forward and the garden begins its transition into the season ahead. In the Field, we’re looking at a few of the ways we design, observe and care for landscapes through this change.

A landscape is never designed for just one moment. Fall is a useful time to observe what still holds shape, movement and interest as the growing season slows.

Look beyond what’s flowering. Paths, evergreen planting, trees and grasses become increasingly important as other planting recedes.

Choose plants for what they offer beyond bloom. Grasses, seed heads and changing foliage can bring texture, movement and warmth well into fall and winter.

Resist cutting everything back at once. Leaving selected grasses and seed heads standing adds winter interest while providing food and shelter for wildlife.

Fall is also a good time to plant and transplant, while cooler temperatures can help reduce stress as plants establish ahead of winter.

Long sightlines shape the landscape at Beacon View. Here boardwalks, planting and water create a natural connection between the main and guest houses. A slender negative-edge pool sits quietly within the composition, while layers of planting draw the architecture into the landscape carrying the eye toward the water.
