Frozen Pipes? Here’s What to Do

If you turn on a faucet and nothing comes out, your pipes might be frozen. Here’s how to handle it:
1. Find Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve: Know where it is in case you need to turn off the water quickly.
2. Add Heat to the Room: Increase the temperature in the affected area. Open cabinet doors to let warm air reach the pipes. Space heaters can help, but use them with caution.
3. Turn on the Faucet: Open the affected faucet and listen. As the pipes thaw, the water will begin to trickle, then flow.
4. Check the Main Water Line: If no water flows anywhere in your home, the main water service line may be frozen where it enters your home, often high on the wall near the ceiling. Add heat to that area and keep faucets open.
5. Inspect for Leaks: Once water starts flowing, check for leaks or water where it doesn’t belong. If you see any, shut off your main water supply immediately and call a plumber.

Be Patient: Thawing pipes can take several hours to days. For homes with PEX or CPVC pipes, there’s little a plumber can do to speed up the thawing process. Wait for the lines to thaw and then assess for damage.

If you find damage, reach out to us for repairs. Many repairs from frozen pipes are covered by homeowner’s insurance, so be prepared to contact your insurance agent as well.

We hope this helps! Stay safe and warm!
