Fuzzy wuzzy!! Wooly Bear Caterpillar at TGP Naperville. A familiar sight in Illinois during autumn. Myth!! The caterpillar’s coloring does not reliably predict the coming winter weather.

FROST ADVISORY THIS WEEKEND
The fall feels have arrived and with it comes frost. Temperatures may hover in the low to mid 30s early Saturday morning. What does this mean for your annual mums and containers?

While many fall annuals, such as mums, celosia and marigolds can handle the lower temperatures, the buds and blooms can be affected by a frost. Cover your fall flowering annuals or bring them to a protected area near the house such as a covered porch or garage to keep them looking fresher longer. Use a lightweight breathable fabric such as a frost cloth or bed sheet if left out. Remove the covering or move them back out once the temperature rises above 40 degrees.

Pansies, alyssum, cabbage and ornamental kale are not affected much by a frost — in fact, these plants can even handle a light dusting of snow!

If you haven’t transitioned your houseplants indoors, NOW is the time to do it. Any tropical plants you want to overwinter should be protected indoors. For more overwintering tips read our houseplant blog on our website (thegrowingplace.com) or watch our You Tube video.
