That trench runs the entire length of the basement, and every inch of it needed to come out.
Old clay pipes don't last forever. When they crack and collapse underground, the only real fix is getting down to them, pulling them out, and running new lines through the whole stretch. It's messy, it's loud, and it takes a full crew working in a tight space, but it beats dealing with backups every few weeks.
