You know what I love about this industry?

Nobody cares where you came from.

Nobody cares if you were the popular kid, the honor student, the guy who got laid off, the single mom trying to figure it out, or the kid who got told he'd never amount to anything.

When that service truck rolls up and a customer's door is stuck halfway open, none of that matters.

Can you solve the problem?

Can you show up when you said you would?

Can you shake a hand, look someone in the eye, and stand behind your work?

I've spent most of my life in this trade. I've worked in the heat, the snow, the rain, and plenty of places most people wouldn't crawl into for twice the money. I've met millionaires and I've met guys with twenty bucks in their pocket trying to feed their families.

The thing they all had in common was work ethic.

Not talent.

Not luck.

Work ethic.

The willingness to learn something new. The willingness to fail, get back up, and try again tomorrow.

That's what built this country. That's what built this industry.

At R&R Garage Door Academy, we're not trying to create perfect technicians. We're trying to help build the next generation of people who aren't afraid of hard work, responsibility, and taking pride in what they do.

Because at the end of the day, a trade isn't just a paycheck.

It's freedom.

It's knowing that no matter what happens, you've got a skill nobody can take away from you.

And that's worth learning.

Ask the Expert:

Why Better Teaching Isn’t Optional

Let me tell you something straight.
This trade doesn’t have a talent problem.
It has a teaching problem.
For years, people have confused time on the job with knowing what the hell they’re doing. Standing next to someone longer doesn’t make you smarter. Watching bad habits long enough doesn’t turn them into good ones. It just spreads the damage.
Any real expert will tell you the same thing: most failures don’t come from laziness.. they come from bad instruction.
Guys get shown what to do, never why. They’re told “that’s how we do it” instead of “this is how it fails.” And then everyone acts surprised when doors come down wrong, springs snap, someone gets hurt, or a customer’s trust goes right out the window.
That’s not bad luck.
That’s bad teaching.
In this line of work, ignorance isn’t harmless. These systems carry weight, tension, and consequences. You screw it up, somebody pays... with their body, their house, their business, or their wallet. There’s no room for guesswork, shortcuts, or half-baked knowledge dressed up as experience.
Here’s the truth nobody likes to say out loud:
If you can’t explain it, you don’t actually understand it.
A real expert doesn’t just do the job... they know where it breaks, why it breaks, and how to keep it from breaking again. And if they can’t pass that knowledge down clearly, then all that experience dies with them.
Better teaching isn’t about being nice.
It’s about being responsible.
It’s about training people to think, not just copy. To recognize danger before it shows its teeth. To respect the work, the customer, and the fact that what we install protects real people on the other side of that door.
At R&R Garage Door Academy, we don’t sell fairy tales or fast tracks. We teach the trade the way it should’ve been taught all along... straight, disciplined, and without excuses. Because this business doesn’t forgive mistakes, and neither should the training.
So when you ask the expert why better teaching matters, here’s your answer:
Because bad teaching costs more than good training ever will.
And because this trade deserves better than “good enough.”

*This Wasn’t a Business Pivot — It Was a Line We Couldn’t Ignore*

We didn’t add training as a revenue stream.
We added it because:

We kept seeing our friends in this business fixing preventable problems
We kept seeing good people set up to fail
We knew what it felt like to need structure with thier teams and not be given it
If the proper training of the techs prevents one injury, one failed install, or one tech walking away from the job frustrated because no one took the time to teach them correctly — it matters.
