About two years ago, I set a goal to earn my Master Electrical License in every New England state.
Today, I officially completed that goal.
What I thought would be a straightforward process turned out to be anything but. The exams were actually the easy part—the real challenge was the paperwork, documentation, and navigating each state’s process.
Every state moved relatively smoothly, taking anywhere from 1–3 months… except Massachusetts.
Massachusetts took over a year just to approve my Journeyman license so I could even sit for the exam. That delay alone set everything back. On top of that, I was required to complete an additional year of schooling just to qualify for the Master license.
A good friend of mine, , pushed me to enroll in the Master course before I was even approved to take the Journeyman exam. That decision ended up being huge—it allowed me to stay ahead once Massachusetts finally got things moving.
That meant driving from Rhode Island to Fall River 3–4 nights a week, in rush hour traffic, for an entire year… all while running a business.
For context, I started with my Rhode Island Master license in 2023. From there I earned my New Hampshire license, then my Maine Master, then my Connecticut Master (E1), and later my Vermont Master, which took a little more paperwork than the others.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, I also went through the process of applying for and receiving my Massachusetts S license, which came with its own paperwork and background checks.
Meanwhile, Massachusetts was still… Massachusetts.
After over a year of back-and-forth, I was finally approved to take the Journeyman exam, completed the Master course in April 2025, and applied to sit for the Master exam.
Then work got busy, and I hadn’t carved out the time to prep.
Last week, I got an email from the state saying I had 5 days to take the exam or my application would be canceled and I’d have to start over.
No chance I was letting that happen.
I canceled a job, booked the exam, walked in with zero prep…
…and passed.
Goal complete.
