finally getting to burn the last 8 acres of our 14.5 acre stumping job. after weeks upon weeks of delay due to burn bans and dry weather. today, the rain finally showed up and we got fire on the ground. 🔥🌧🚜

Dirt Works has been busy working on multiple jobs, but do to the lack of rain, we haven't been able to show these jobs off just yet. This one here though, all the debris had to be hauled off, so we are proud to show the transformation to this lot clearing job we completed in Tarboro. Once the debris was removed, the customer wanted some dirt moved around to help level the lot up, so we took our expertise and made it happen. The job turned out great! A huge shout to Carolina Turf & Lawn for the referral and the help on the job.

🌧️ Why Do Ponds Leak After a Good Rain? 🌧️

We often get calls from landowners who notice their pond level dropping shortly after a big rain. It seems backwards — shouldn’t a good rain keep a pond full? The truth is, rainfall can sometimes reveal problems that were already there.

Here are a few common reasons ponds struggle to hold water:
🔹soil compaction during construction
🔹 Burrowing animals in the dam
🔹 Decaying roots or vegetation
🔹 Spillway or erosion issues
🔹 Soils that don’t seal well

This job started as getting rid of this wooded area and turning it into pasture, but once we got in and seen how wet the area was, on top of discovering multiple springs thru out, we consulted with the landowner and suggested that a pond be put in place so that he would be able to maintain the area. Without the pond, the area would have never been able to be maintained by a tractor and bush hog due to the wet, unsuitable soil. The landowner agreed, and so we went to building a pond. And boy did we have to hurry, it was filling up just as fast as we were building it seemed. This roughly acre and a quarter area started out rough, wet, unusable, but now will be a great fishing spot with many added fish habits and shelves left, plus a good watersupply for the cows.

One of the most important (and often overlooked) parts of a pond build is grade. The slope, elevation, and compaction of the soil are what allow a pond to actually hold water. 💧

Sometimes the natural lay of the land can create an optical illusion— small elevation changes can make a big difference in whether a pond holds water or lets it escape. What looks level to the eye may be off just enough to cause drainage issues later on. That’s why proper grading, experience, and attention to detail matter from the very first cut.

A solid foundation today means a pond that lasts for years to come. 🎣
