Here is my inlaid dovetail box. Cherry, walnut, and brass. This was my first fine woodworking project leveraging primarily hand tools. This memory box was built for my daughter Edith.

The process of building this taught me so much about this craft. Lessons on tools, design, wood grain and behavior. I hope that she enjoys this small token of my love for the rest of her life.

Well here it is.At long last, my new workbench is done. This is an 8 foot long timber frame bench. To build this bench I followed the book “the Anarchist Workbench” by Christopher Schwarz from . This was the biggest build of my life (to date). It’s also the first thing I have ever really made for myself.

I only deviated from Mr. Schwartz’s design intentionally in 2 respects. My bench is one inch taller, and the tool well is 5 inches wide rather than 3. Other wise any deviation represents a skill issue than a design choice.

I poured about 200 hours into this bench and feel safe in saying my kids and their kids will be able to use it they so wish. Beyond the joy of working at this bench, I got spend a week with my father working on this bench. That alone makes it one of the most special things I own. Forever when I step to my work bench I will be able to reflect on that week of work in my shop with my father. One of the best weeks of my life.

My one regret about this bench? That I didn’t build it sooner. Go build yours!

A vise chop. Simple and functional. This one is made of hard maple. I expect this bench to serve me for decades. Finding the ripple and movement in grain was so exciting. The chatoyance of this board is so entrancing but not over stated. Function can be beautiful. This is one of those times for me.

The dry fit is in! There still a ton of clean up, but look at those inlays! It will be a beat or two before glue up, but man does it feel good to finally see these in lays!

Alright look tonight didn’t go how I wanted it to. While doing the fine work on the tail sockets the grain ran on me a few times and blew out sections that needed to be repaired and glued back in, effectively grinding my progress to a stop for the night. (Pictures 3 and 4).

But you can start to see the inlay plan here! (Pictures 1 and 2) showing how the walnut in lay will trace around our dove tails. Each void here will be filled by our cherry pins from the other board.

Trying to decide which wood makes the most sense walnut or cherry for the bottom. There is no good build reason to pick one or the other. It’s purely for looks. Not sure where I land but here is a little preview of how it could look.

Here is my little slap dash chisel rack from the other night. It’s not perfect but what I needed was a temporary solution to getting my chisels out to where I can use em. Not bad for 1.5 hours work. Good enough for shop furniture and good enough for now

Presenting the two tone cubby, or as I have taken to calling it, “the skunk cubby”. Made from solid walnut and maple. I really wanted to explore and practice my joinery technique so this entire project used no metal. No screw, and no nails, just physics and a bit of wood glue holds the heirloom quality peace together. As always, one of a kind, custom designed and hand built.
