Summer Lawn Maintenance Tips:

1) Mow Your Lawn Higher: A blade height of 3-4" might give you a "rough" look, but will help roots to grow deeper where water is less likely to evaporate. There is a direct correlation between root depth and lawn height. As weather cools down towards the end of the summer, begin to lower you mower blade a bit each week until you reach your desired height.

2) Water Deeply & Less Frequently: Roots are opportunistic. If you supply regular water in only the top 1 inch of soil, there's no need for roots to grow deep. Giving your lawn a heavy soaking every 3-5 days in the summer will encourage deeper roots to form.

3) Apply Organic Fertilizers: New England Grasses grow best when temperatures are between 65-70 degrees. When the heat is on, synthetic fertilizers can burn grass blades. Organic and Organic Blend fertilizers feed the soil microbes which then break down the fertilizer making it available to the grass. Pelletized Pasteurized Poultry Manure is a good choice. Apply at 50 lbs. per 1000 SF.

4) Control Weeds, Insect & Disease: Be careful when applying chemical pesticides of any kind when temperatures are above 85 degrees. Many of the liquid forms are petroleum based and can cause a condition known as Phytotoxicity...which will kill the weed...and the grass too!

In general, lawns are pretty resilient, they just need the right weather, soil and nutrient conditions to thrive. It's the three legged stool effect...take one away and it just doesn't work.
