Thick brush under pines is fuel. When a fire gets going in the woods, the understory is what carries it along the ground and up into the trees. Clear that out and leave the pines standing, and you've got woods you can see into and walk through with a lot less for a fire to feed on.

New on the NOBL Sitework blog. Most stalled sitework jobs stall for the same six reasons, and nearly all

of them are decided before a machine shows up. Each one, and what we do

about it.

Six things that stall a sitework job around here, from paperwork nobody started to rain on clay, and what we do on every lot to get ahead of each one.

If there's going to be a gate on a rock drive, set it back off the road far enough that a truck and trailer can pull all the way in before anybody gets out to open it. Put it right at the road and every delivery sits in the road with its flashers on while somebody fiddles with the latch. Plan the gate with the drive, not after it.

Got the debris hauled off? Once it's gone, you can finally see the holes and low spots underneath. That's what fill dirt is for. Ours comes straight out of our own pit in Navarre, in our own trucks. Type your ZIP at order.noblsitework.com/order to see your delivered price for fill dirt and book it from your phone.

If a clearing price has a line for mobilization, this is what it's paying for. It's the truck and equipment trailer that haul the machine out to the property, and the trip to bring it home when the work's done. On a job in Crestview, the empty trailer sits by the road while the excavator works the brush pile.

New on the NOBL Sitework blog. A driveway that lasts is mostly what is under it and where the water goes.

The cut, the base, the crown and the approach at the road, the way we build

them on sand and on clay.

How a driveway gets built on a new lot: the cut, base rock in lifts, the crown, where the water goes, the road approach and keeping trucks off it wet.

Water running across a driveway toward a garage has nowhere to go but under the door. A channel drain catches it in the grate and carries it off through pipe before it gets there. It runs the whole width of the door, so it catches water wherever it crosses, where a round drain only gets what happens to run right to it. Call the office at 850-238-3307 if water keeps getting under your garage door.

Stripped ground can't take much rain before it's too soft to work. Running machines on it anyway just digs ruts somebody has to fix later, and pulling out a stuck machine takes longer than waiting would have. When weather like that rolls in, sometimes the smartest thing a crew can do is park it.
