This shows the progression of repair to a historic brick windowsill.

The first photo shows the attempt to patch the brickwork with a cement-based mortar years ago. This led to significant damage within the wall system. Lime mortar was used in the rebuild, which will allow trapped moisture to gradually escape from the wall.

These bricks were handmade on site during the construction of this building in 1888. Efforts are now underway to repair the brickwork properly. No shortcuts, no substitutions. Just good old fashioned historic masonry preservation.

There will be more photos to come as the work progresses and I tackle several projects at this location.

All windowsills will receive an application of lime plaster to complete the repair. Stay tuned!

I get by with a little help from my friends! 🎡

A tree fell during Helene and took out the column. It's now secure back in place and will be pointed up tomorrow.

Can anyone guess what this is going to be? 🧐Hint: it's not a shallow grave

The capstones are back on a small retaining wall in Old Salem Museums & Gardens.

A severe wind storm blew down the iron fence that will soon be reinstalled by Red's Metal Works. The force of the winds and the falling fence dislodged the granite capstones and caused structural damage to the retaining wall.

Heart of Stone Masonry took the wall down and built it back, respecting the wall's original design. The bricks used in the wall are handmade bricks from Pine Hall Brick Company, in Winston Salem.

Given the location of the wall and difficulty of access, the work was laborious and was all done by hand. The end result was well worth the effort.
