Brown lawn in July? Don't tear it out yet.

Most Wisconsin lawns that brown out in the summer heat aren't dead, they're dormant, and about ninety percent of bluegrass lawns bounce back once the rain returns. But not every brown patch is harmless. Fertilizer and herbicide damage can look similar at a glance.

Here's the trick to telling them apart: dormancy follows geography, chemical damage follows geometry. If the brown follows your hills, hot edges, and south-facing slopes, it's probably drought stress. If it looks like something a machine drew (stripes, circles, hard edges), a product may be to blame.
