Overall, nature is beneficial for human well-being and health. Hospital patients recover in a room with a view of trees and landscapes faster than those looking at a brick wall.

And now we know that being in nature reduces cortisol levels and blood pressure. Trees produce chemicals that are in the air to ward off fungus and insects and we take that into our cells and we improve our immune system.

We had a couple that started a landscape project in their backyard and then Mike got sick. Kris created a detailed project plan with a drawing and asked for our help with the grading and the base course of the wall.

The first pictures are of the project site that we first saw. Ray and Cam graded and installed the first course of the wall. They sent me that picture on July 2 at 1:25 p.m. when they went back in the morning Kris had stacked the entire wall that afternoon. We went back and helped with a few other small projects. The final phots are the pictures that she sent me last week after she planted some native plants.

Why do we feel so much better looking at this beautiful landscape rather than stacks of wall block, weeds and piles of soil?

Today is the day. It’s raining down Ginko leaves. This happens at a different time each year and it is always something to see. It has to be less than 28 degrees for at least an hour or two. The Atlantic explained in 2017 that the cold triggers the formation of protective scars on the leaves’ stems, causing them to detach. The scarring occurs gradually for other deciduous trees, but for ginkgos, it happens all at once.

Degree Days - today’s degree day base 50 is 2096.5. We keep track of this number because it tells us when insects are active. We cannot strictly go by the calendar. Last year on this date the degree day was 1768.5. The degree day calculation is a measurement of heat units over time, calculated from daily maximum and minimum temperatures. The next insect that we are preparing for is the cool season mite. They are active in spring and again in fall when the temperatures drop. They are active during degree day 2375 and 2806. They can do a lot of damage to Spruce Trees and Arborvitaes. If you have a problem that looks like this we can help you control this mite.

We recommend wrapping young trees and small trees with branches the size of a pencil with white tulle to protect from the cicada damage. The netting material should be light weight allowing water and sun through. This should start early May to protect the tree from the females making slits in the branches and laying their eggs. Large mature trees will most likely recover but young trees may have permanent damage and not fully recover without protection. Please call us if you have any questions. The experts also recommend taking extra good care of all trees by watering, mulching and pruning.

We will be spraying Crabapples, Apples and Lilacs this Spring with a preventative fungicide spray. Crabapples and Apples get Apple Scab that causes the leaves to turn yellow with black spots and then the leaves fall off in late summer. Repeated infections can weaken the trees. Lilacs have been suffering from lilac blight. This can kill the shrub after just a few infections. The wet cool / hot Spring is expected to make the infections worse as the fungal spores are spread by
water.

We have been receiving calls regarding the cicadas that will be emerging in May. Here is an excellent article from The U of I Extension.

They will not hurt shrubs, turf, perennials or annuals but they can do damage to trees. I recommend that you make your mature trees as healthy as possible. We have some suggestions on how to do that. I would recommend not planting new trees until after the egg laying cycle. The females make slits in 1-2 year old branches, pencil size diameter, and deposit their eggs. This can cause damage and even kill young trees. We will have white tulle available to wrap young trees if you need help. Please let us know if you have any questions.

We now have a Certified Arborist on staff. Please call us for consulting, diagnosis, fertilization, pest management, pruning and tree planting. Trees have been suffering with our temperature and moisture extremes in the last few year. We can teach you how to identify that your tree is planted, watered, fertilized and pruned correctly. All of these help ensure that your tree and plant material are healthy and happy!
