Why Fall is the Perfect Time to Plant Trees and Shrubs in Eastern North Carolina
As the leaves turn shades of gold and crimson across Eastern North Carolina, there's more to celebrate than just cooler breezes and pumpkin spice everything. Fall isn't just a season for cozy sweaters—it's the prime window for planting trees and shrubs. If you're dreaming of a lush, low-maintenance landscape that thrives through our humid summers and mild winters, now's your chance to get ahead. At Croatan Landscape Company, we've seen firsthand how fall plantings set clients up for success. Backed by expert research from NC State Extension and local horticulturists, here's why you should dig in this autumn—and how we can make it effortless for you.

The Science Behind Fall Planting: Why It Beats Spring Every Time
In Eastern North Carolina's coastal plain, with its sandy soils and subtropical climate, timing is everything for new trees and shrubs. While spring gets all the hype, fall—from mid-September through early December—offers unbeatable conditions for root establishment without the heat stress. Here's the breakdown, straight from trusted sources:
1. Cooler Temperatures Mean Less Plant Stress
Summer's scorching highs (often 90°F+ in places like Wilmington or Greenville) can shock newly planted trees, leading to wilting and higher mortality rates. In fall, daytime temps drop to a comfortable 60-75°F, allowing plants to focus energy on roots rather than leafy growth. As NC Cooperative Extension notes, this reduced stress helps trees and shrubs

This presentation highlights our recently completed outdoor living space project. We overlaid existing concrete with Belgard Magnolia pavers, constructed an elevated deck using Ipe Brazilian Walnut (also known as Lapacho what we like to call it), and integrated an elevated Zen garden with surrounding landscaping. Initial work included significant tree and brush removal and the construction of a granite retaining wall to support nine truckloads of fill. The site was originally a low-lying wetland. Please refer to the comments section for a "before" video; platform limitations precluded its inclusion here. Before and after videos in previous post.
