A new study by NAHB finds that regulations at the federal, state and local levels add $131,734 to the cost of a new single-family home—26.4% of the average sales price of $499,500 as of January 2026.

The construction industry continues to face a shortage of skilled workers. Craven Community College's Volt Center is looking for experienced professionals to help close that gap by serving as part-time instructors in Plumbing and Carpentry, amongst other trades.
You don't need teaching experience—we're looking for individuals with real-world industry experience who are willing to share their craft with the next generation. Students earn industry-recognized credentials, including NCCER certifications, as they progress through the program.
Flexible teaching opportunities are available:
• Daytime classes: Monday–Thursday (no Fridays)
• Evening classes: Typically three nights per week, with instructors helping choose the schedule
This is more than a teaching opportunity—it's a chance to invest in the future of the trades, mentor aspiring professionals, and potentially identify future employees for your business.

The median wage of payroll workers in construction was $61,370 in 2025, with the top 25% earning at least $83,480. In comparison, the U.S. median annual wage was $50,980, while the highest paid 25% earned at least $80,520.
