Do:
• check your water heater regularly
• keep your water heater well ventilated
• consider switching to a tankless water heater
• replace your water heater when it shows signs of wear and tear
• follow the steps to drain your water heater

Don't
• set your water heater temperature above 120 degrees Fahrenheit
• keep combustible material within 18 inches of the hot water heater
• allow plaque and sediment to build up in your tank
• wait too long to call in for repairs, especially if you notice a leak
