Today’s blower door test replicates a 20 mph wind being simultaneously applied to all exterior surfaces. The test measures the airtightness of the home. The code in New Castle allows for 7 ACH. (Air change per hour). 805 was built from the ground up anticipating this test. The house measures 2.7ACH. the second picture shows the insulation on the exterior concrete foundation and sealant applied under the walls and insulated exterior sheeting with a factory applied air and moisture barrier and all seams sealed. Not much has changed in home building except for our energy codes, and this is a good change!

We have started another historic project at the Glenwood Springs Amtrack. As we begin the demolition process to accommodate a new elevator shaft it is interesting to note differences in today's methods and materials and those from 1903. Here is a picture of a 2x4 from the past and one from today. The new one will average 16 years of growth verses the old growth of possibility more than 100. The old material is incredibly dense and strong!

This shed had to be saved, it could be as early as 1880. The only thing keeping it together was the metal roofing, as the lower walls had disintegrated. This is placing it on its new foundation.
