🌱 Exciting progress on the two-day Ecosystem Restoration Dialogue in East Kalimantan,  Indonesia! 🌱

Day 1 saw participants diving deep into identifying challenges facing ecosystem restoration. After an opening welcome by the Vice Minister of Forestry and the Environment, plenary discussions reflected on field visits from the prior two days. In breakout groups, we discussed challenges before returning to plenary for further dialogue.

Day 2 prioritized identified challenges, covering crucial issues from capacity and knowledge gaps to policy ambiguities. These topics were tackled during Carousel Breakout Discussions, where action plans were developed for private-corporate collaboration, political will, funding, and more.

We’re thrilled by the success of our dialogue, paving the way for ongoing discussions and actions to restore ecosystems in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Heartfelt thanks to all participants, our program host Universitas Mulawarman, and sponsors FOA for their invaluable contributions and support.

🌿 It’s time for another look at the Ecosystem Restoration Field Dialogue in East Kalimantan, Indonesia!🌏

Day 2 of our East Kalimantan Field Dialogue provided an illuminating journey through the heart of restoration efforts. We embarked on field visits to various sites, including the Mangrove Center in Balikpapan, where we witnessed firsthand the remarkable transformation taking place through community-led mangrove restoration work. (Picture 1)

Our exploration continued to the New Capital City/Nusantara (IKN), where ambitious restoration initiatives are shaping the future landscape through restoration pilot sites, such as a eucalyptus plantation and a native, mixed species forest.

Additionally, we delved into the Research and Education Forest at Mulawarman University (UnMul), gaining insights into innovative approaches to conservation and education, including enhancing restoration planting and cultivating a plant nursery.

The day concluded with a visit to a Restoration Site, in collaboration with the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF), where practices like planting, assisted natural regeneration, direct seeding are furthering ecosystem restoration efforts.

Each site underscored the collective commitment to restoring and preserving East Kalimantan’s precious ecosystems.
