A door closer is not one speed, it is three, and they are set independently. Sweep controls the main swing. Latch speed controls the last few inches, which is what decides whether the bolt engages or the door bounces. Backcheck stops the door flying into the wall when someone shoves it in the wind. A door that slams, drifts or never quite latches is almost always a closer that was never set — not a door that needs replacing.

A forced front door almost never fails at the lock. It fails at the frame, where the strike plate is held by two three-quarter-inch screws that bite into soft trim and nothing else. Fitting a good deadbolt into that is spending money on the wrong half of the job. A reinforced strike and three-inch screws that reach the framing behind the jamb is what turns a kick into a dent.
