Ever notice those metal stars on older brick buildings? They're not just decorative! They're called anchor plates, and they're often connected to steel rods that help stabilize masonry walls. Pretty clever engineering, especially considering how long some of these buildings have been standing.

Ever notice a white, powdery coating on brick or masonry? It’s called efflorescence. It happens when moisture moves through masonry and brings naturally occurring salts to the surface. As the moisture evaporates, the salts are left behind.

It’s not always a sign of a serious problem, but it does tell you moisture has been moving through the masonry.

Ever notice the little openings near the bottom of a brick wall? They’re called weep holes, and they’re intentional. They allow moisture behind the brick veneer a way to drain out. Sometimes a hole in your house is exactly where it’s supposed to be.
