FREEZE INCOMING:

With the expected low temperatures starting tomorrow evening into Tuesday; I’d like to share a few tips to prepare your home and keep your plumbing safe!

• Locate and identify if you have a main water shutoff to your home. If you do, verify that it works in the case you will need to turn off the water due to a busted pipe(s). If you don’t, please contact your water company and/or plumber if you are in need of assistance to turn your water off.

• Homes off the ground (this includes trailers) are more susceptible to pipes freezing as there is more exposure to the elements. If permanent skirting is not in place, temporary skirting can be installed with plastic sheeting to prevent wind chill. Circulating wind chill under your home will significantly contribute to the cooling of the exposed piping.

• Cover/insulate any exposed water pipes, faucets, and spigots located on the exterior of your home. If insulation or spigot covers are hard to come by at the store…old t-shirts and rags will help!

• Homes on slabs are more protected from freezes as there is less plumbing exposure. Still highly recommended to open cabinet doors and drip faucets.

• When trying to prevent pipes from freezing during a freeze, you should "drip" your faucets, meaning let a very slow, steady drip of water flow out, not a full stream. This is because moving water is less likely to freeze than stagnant water, and a small drip is enough to keep the pipes flowing and prevent ice buildup.

• Keep the heater on in your home and open the cabinet doors below your faucets, especially the ones that share an exterior wall. This will circulate some warmer air in the cabinets.

🔳 Insulating pipes will only do so much when temperatures get this low. 95% of the busted pipes we’ve repaired during freezes are insulated. Our infrastructure in the South just isn’t built to handle cold temperatures. If water is not flowing in the pipes and it gets below freezing (32 degrees), the water will expand and break the pipe(s). So is it worth fighting everyone in line at the store for insulation?…probably not.
