The GSI team recently rolled up their sleeves for a day of volunteering at the beautiful Churchill Valley Greenway. The Greenway is managed by the Allegheny Land Trust (https://alleghenylandtrust.org/) who managed the volunteer effort. The day included trail maintenance and invasive species removal, contributing to preserving this vital green space for the community.

🔍 Tackling Legacy Issues: The Complex Art of MGP Site Remediation

Manufactured Gas Plants (MGPs) once powered cities across the U.S., but they left behind a legacy of environmental challenges. Remediating these sites today is not just about cleanup—it's about innovation, precision, and protecting communities.

🛠️ What Makes MGP Sites So Challenging?

MGPs produced gas from coal, oil, or other feedstocks, leaving behind coal tar that includes polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other persistent and dangerous compounds. These compounds are notoriously difficult to remove due to their chemical stability and tendency to bind tightly to soil and sediment.

🌍 Modern Remediation Techniques

- In-Situ Solidification/Stabilization (ISS): This technique mixes contaminated soil with binding agents to immobilize pollutants.

- Slurry Walls and Containment Barriers: These are used to isolate contamination and prevent migration, especially near sensitive receptors like rivers or residential areas.

- Thermal Desorption and Excavation: In some cases, high-temperature treatment or targeted excavation is used to remove the most toxic materials.
