Burns and brown spots on the lawn, and what is often called "female dog spot disease," is caused from the concentrated nitrogen in our pet's urine. Female, and male dogs, even rabbits can cause burns. Studies have shown that it's the concentration of the urine, rather then the volume, that does the most damage. Most mild burned areas will repair themselves over time. Fescue and perennial ryegrass are the most resistant to urine effects. In fact, urine in it's diluted state causes a fertilizer effect on the grass. Kentucky Bluegrass and Bermuda Grass seem to be more sensitive to concentrated urine, resulting in severe burns. If you find you have brown urine burns in your yard from your four-legged friend, here are some tips to repair and prevent those spots:
1. Water the area where they have urinated within 8 hours. You should use a hose to spread out the concentrated urine as far as possible. (If it has not been diluted enough it will leave a dark green circle.)
2. Change their diet! Please talk to a pet nutritionist to be sure the new diet is species appropriate, and contains more moisture.
3. Increase their water intake to dilute their urine. Keep in mind with the increased water intake, they will need to potty more, but it will contain less nitrates.
4. Re-seed the brown, burned spot.
5. Create a "potty garden" with mulch or pea gravel.
