At Blooming Gardens, we have been busy going from nursery to nursery looking for all the springtime arrivals of new plants. There is a bustling of people everywhere with smiles on their faces and flowers in their hands and baskets.

Springtime is knocking on the door and getting the garden ready for spring is something home gardeners look forward to all winter long. The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, and it's almost time for a new season to begin.

But there's more to preparing your garden for planting than paging through seed catalogs and daydreaming about juicy homegrown tomatoes. You'll want to take stock of your gear and supplies, make a plan, and get everything ready for a successful growing season.

Steps we should be taking to getting our garden ready for spring.

1- Prune Trees and Shrubs - time to remove any dead or damaged growth, removing cross branches, and shape the plant.

2- Check Tools and Equipment - it's a great idea to inspect tools and equipment you'll need to garden.

3- Inventory Seeds and Supplies - time to buy need seeds, but it's important to inventory any seeds, bulbs, or other propagation material you may have saved from previous seasons.

4- Plan Your Garden - this is the time gardeners look forward to: sitting down with your seed inventory, a stack of seed catalogs, and a notebook to dream up the new season's planting plan.

5- Order Seeds and Plant Start - once you've made your garden plan, it's time to order seeds.

6- Clean Up Garden Beds and Planters - time to clean up your garden beds and planters.

7- Prepare the Soil - you will want to prep garden beds, by either tilling or raking in organic compost.

8- Start Seeds Indoors - indoor seed starting is one of the best ways to save money when planting your garden.

As we look forward to spring, and we dream about our gardens, at Blooming Gardens, springtime is our favorite time of the year. Need help with your gardens, contact Daina at 985-688-7788 or email [email protected], and let's talk about your spring garden.

One of the added joys to gardening is having a potting shed. Every gardener has a different idea of what their shed looks like. The ideal space is a personal, practical place.

The potting shed is the heart of the garden. It's where the day begins and ends, where plants get their start, and where harvest are gathered. Your potting shed is where you anticipate the coming of spring by sowing seeds, where you seek shelter from summer heat or sudden rainstorms.

Potting sheds sometimes look like playhouses, so it's not surprising that we spend so much time in them. With the optimism of a child, we sow seeds of our favorite flowers. With the skill of a surgeon, we take stem cuttings and secure them in a sterile potting medium where they sprout new roots. And with the precision of an assembly-line worker, we tediously transplant hundreds of tiny seedlings.

Of course, sometimes we just sit there relaxing in a rocker, listening to the patter of rain on the roof patiently watching our garden grow.

Blooming Gardens loves potting sheds and enjoys touring other gardener's sheds. If you have a potting shed, show us your shed.

If you need help with ideas of what your shed should have in it or just talk ideas about your new shed, call Daina at 985-688-7788, and let's talk about your new playhouse.

Who doesn't enjoy a beautiful fern, whether indoors or outdoors in your garden? Ferns are hardy, low maintenance and make great houseplants.

Ferns originated in dense tropical shady woodlands and it's important that house ferns have a similar environment. This means that fern houseplants grow best indoors where they get plenty of shade. You should keep them away from windows where there is direct sunlight.

Ferns like plenty of humidity, so if you have a fern indoors you may need to mist your fern daily to help it grow well.

Ferns are also a great plant for your garden especially for ground cover in shady areas. Ferns need plenty of shade to thrive outdoors as too much sun can burn the leaves.

To help your ferns grow well outside, you need to water them enough. Ferns like a lot of water, so water them often.

Blooming Gardens loves ferns, and with so many varieties, what's not to love about ferns.

Need help with adding ferns to your home or garden, not sure which ones would grow best in your surroundings, contact Daina at 985-688-7788 or email [email protected] for a FREE consultation and let's talk ferns.

Let me introduce you to the Monstera Deliciosa, a split-leaf philodendron or also known as the Swiss cheese plant. This monster is native to the rainforest of Central America from southern Mexico to Panama and commonly grown as a foliage houseplant.

It has glossy, heart-shaped leaves that have rounded deep clefts and oblong perforations as they grow older. Leaves get up to 18" wide.

In nature this plant is an evergreen trailing vine which grows high into the rainforest canopy. It can grow up to 70 ft or more.

As a houseplant it doesn't get as big, but it can take up a lot of space in your home.

We love the Monstera Deliciosa at Blooming Gardens, and it is one monster of a plant to have in your home. The Monstera Deliciosa can take over a space if you don't care for it properly.

Blooming Gardens takes care of plants like this and others for restaurants and hotels. If you are in need of someone to maintain and care for the health of your plants, contact Daina at 985-688-7788 or email [email protected] for an appointment. FEBURARY TO DO LIST!!

There is always something that can be done in the garden, and this month we can focus on some of these things to get our garden to perform at it’s best.

Pruning - Except for maples and birches, now is a good time to prune trees.

Trees - Now is time to plant hardy trees, shrubs and ground covers in the landscape. This will give them time to make some root growth before the heat of summer.

Start Seeds - Start flowers and vegetables that benefit from an early start indoors in February.

Feed the birds - By late winter many natural food sources for local birds will begin to thin out.

Force branches for early bloomers - Early spring-blooming shrubs can be forced to bloom indoors this time of year.

Take care of your lawn - When you see dandelions starting to go to the puffball seeding stage for the first time, that means the soil is starting to warm up. This is a signal to prevent crabgrass and other seasonal weeds from germinating. Time to look for a preemergence herbicide.

There is always something that can be done in the garden. Keeping a garden beautiful and keeping weeds under control can be time consuming. If you don't have the time to maintain your garden and need help restoring or refreshing it for Spring, contact Daina at Blooming Gardens at 985-688-7788 or email [email protected] for a FREE consultation, and let's talk about your garden ideas for the Spring.
