Life Lesson #1 of 2026: The strongest roots, lushest leaves, and biggest blooms are built in dead of winter— the coldest, darkest, dreariest season…

Most only think of the magic— the delicious veggies and breathtaking flowers— when they see it come spring. But few appreciate what it takes to from what they see as nothing.

✨How fortunate are those with foresight✨

Today, I’m looking at empty raised beds, unwanted weeds & grass, and debris where my beautiful garden used to be….

But with every sown seed, I’m reminded not to be weighed down what I see but to focus on the beauty of what’s to come…

I love me some okra, but her leaves really don’t love me back 😩

Thank you for letting me try your arm protectors— between the stinking pests (they saved me from a hornets’ nest, too) and irritating leaves, these protectors are ESSENTIAL for us Southern gardeners 🫶🏾💚

For us gardeners in South Louisiana, mid-late spring is when gardening starts to get a little less romantic and a little more challenging.

Along with slowed production from our warm season crops, we see an uptick in:

📌 Nutrient deficiencies
📌 Pest Pressure
📌 Plant Disease

Here’s 4 simple things I’m doing in my garden NOW so that my summer gardening experience isn’t miserable and I’m not looking at an ugly & empty greenspace next month.

✨Send this to someone who needs to take a beat before they act…✨

It’s getting warmer AND rainier, which means garden pests are coming. For us Louisiana gardeners, the peace of spring gardening is coming to an end 😩😂

NOW we need to build our control strategies… HOWEVER

Just as in life, folks disregard the other consequences of their actions when facing a challenge.

In the garden, they grab nuclear options for pest control at the first sight of a few aphids.

In life, they scrap a whole idea and abandon their goals.

💭But what’s the trade-off?🤔

🚩Nuclear options in the garden mean hurting beneficial insects, like assassin bugs, that have come to HELP you manage pests.

🚩Quitting is a betrayal, subconsciously proving that you can’t keep promises to yourself.

Life lesson: Let go of the “all or nothing” approach and practice discernment. You do that by simply remaining curious— gather more information so that you can consider both challenges AND benefits before taking action.

Are you someone who thinks that if they over-prepare, they’ll achieve that thing or finish that project… but stop yourself before you even begin?

Yep, me too…

I get excited about something then think of everything that could go wrong until the desire has passed and I never start.

This morning, I was checking on things in the garden because the cool nights are making me concerned about the warm season stuff I’ve planted…

Things are growing, albeit a bit slower.

The point is that while the air may be cooler, the soil is warm enough and enriched with everything my plants need to handle a little environmental stress.

They aren’t waiting for the perfect conditions of a spring garden; they’re blooming and adjusting as they go…

This is your sign to bloom anyway.

Spring = Mindset adjustment: What are your spring gardening goals?

The last few years, I’ve been focused on learning & observing, but this year, I’ve set a few goals for my spring garden:

1) Prioritizing soil health: my dad gave his blessing for me to break in the backyard 🙌🏾. The goal is to push past the noise & desire for instant results and focus on scientifically proven methods to turn that space into a productive, pollinator-friendly machine (so excited!)

2) Documenting my seasons: things are changing, y’all. Weather is different and plants are behaving… well… differently. But I’m on top of it and will share info as I learn it.

3) More flowers: I want to support our pollinators with carefully placed natives & non-natives, but I want more beauty. So, I’m going to be adding more florals around my crops AND a cut flower space… somewhere lol

4) Fruit trees: I’ve been growing loads of annual seasonal veggies but now with an economic recession looming, I’m thinking about how I want to feed my family long-term, relying less on the grocery store. We love love berries and citrus, so that’s where I’ll start.

5) Processing: dehydrator, preserving, canning, storage— less waste, more abundance.
