Well we've been rained out for a little bit in south Louisiana. I've been so busy that I havnt posted pictures and info about a handful of jobs. But here is a 42 footer we are working on right now.
I guess the customer was ripped off by the last guy that worked on it so he was referred to us by Newton Boats(thank you Larry Newton). It wasnt sanded or anything before it was bottom painted last time and there was no barrier coat underneath to protect the gelcoat and fiberglass from blistering. So we blasted it bare, fixed the blisters of any significance and have started the process of barrier coating it properly. I'll have more pictures when its finished. Well we are up early watching the weather wondering if we get to work today, but anyway.. FIBERGLASS BLISTERS!
Process from beginning to end.
Blisters are delamination in the bottom of the hull due to water(pores in the barrier coat, time for a new barrier coat, etc..) somehow finding its was into the fiberglass. Have them tended to before it turns into a fiberglass project so big that you have to sell the boat.
1. Grind out all delamination and bevel.
2. It's not uncommon to need 8-10 layers of glass to get it slightly higher than flush
3. Sand flush.
4. 2 part epoxy barrier coat 10 mils thick. Gelcoat is not waterproof. Used epoxy barrier coat

Then you are ready to sand the barrier coat smooth and paint.

I have good deals on blister repairs for customers that give me the whole bottom job. I also go down on price the higher number of blisters there are.

Bottom stripped. New barrier coat last year. Trinidad bottom. NO Blisters.

Solid fiberglass(no wood) bullworks built by me.

New engine, winches, floors and bilges. Everything works
Dont look inside though lol....under construction(cut the cabin halfway off to make room for new winch) 😉..my crab/shrimp boat

That how it sould be sanded! Dont get ripped off by the guys that charge the same price for a "scuff". Dont wanna wind up paying more money to repair what the last guy didnt do proper. ...and yes I'm fixing his chewed up keel lol
