Over the years the company has grown and developed changing from Sam Staub Carpentry, LLC. As the company started to commit more to historic restoration and slowly move away from commercial and modern renovations, the need for historic window restoration in Southern Louisiana became apparent. The window crew was originally created as a branch of Sam Staub Enterprises, INC. but as the success of th

e window crew soared, Staub Window Restorations, LLC. eventually became a separate entity from Sam Staub Enterprises, INC. As the success of Staub Window Restorations, LLC. continued to increase Sam Staub Enterprises, INC.’s projects were slowly reduced. One man’s trash in another man’s very functional sash pulley. Our restoration specialist Adrian salvaged a box of these rusted old sash pulleys. After using a little elbow grease they look brand new again!

Not all preservation is pretty.
This is why it’s so important to properly ventilate your wall cavities. A window leak quickly snowballed into a larger scale project when we took out the original jambs and the framing beneath started to crumble away. Insulation, two layers of tarpaper, and plywood made a nice condensation sandwich for the framing to rot away in. 😣
After replacing many of the studs, we went the extra mile to install blocking and reinforce the stucco from the outside. Vents were placed at the bottom of each wall cavity to allow air flow through the structure, keeping our materials dry and rot free.

No vignette filter on this one, the window just glows like that. Swipe for the before shots!
Here’s the installment of an earlier post. Our craftsman Michael went above and beyond by recreating the curved muntins and aligning the glass to mimic the miscellaneous color pallet throughout the rest of the building.

Loving these triangular muntin patterns in juxtaposition with the heavy neoclassical elements such as the corinthian pilasters, decorative frieze, and dentals. I think these architects were having a lot of fun!

It's been a long time coming, but Idaya is finally making his debut on social media!

Originally from Montego Bay, Jamaica, Idaya moved here with his family and started working with his father in construction. Over the years Idaya gained an appreciation for carpentry and the trades. He's looking forward to growing in his craft and learning more about Historic Preservation!

The completed upper sash for a church over in Algier's. Michael managed this funky repair and dealt with an interesting decision on the colored glass as none of the windows in the church have a coherent color/texture scheme. We hope this sash will be a wonderful addition to an eclectic set of arched windows.

Did you know that window specialists can guess the time period of a window by analyzing its muntin profiles? It's true!

One of the quickest ways for me to spot a contemporary replacement is by glancing at the muntins and comparing them to other muntins of the house's build date. If you've seen enough, your mind can easily distinguish a late 19th-century sash vs. a sash from the earlier part of the 20th century.

I have to rave today about an incredible project our Restoration Specialist Max just completed. This quirky Queen-Anne window had its lower sash destroyed by firefighters searching the home post-Katrina.

With no photographs existing in the owner’s possession, the only thing we had to go off of was a drawing of the neighborhood by a local artist. Max not only pulled off a gorgeous reconstruction, but those muntins alone would be something to scream about!

While researching some craftsman window detailing today for an upcoming fabrication, I stumbled upon this catalog. As a woman, I can say that these marketers knew what they were doing (who doesn't love a beautiful set of casement windows?). I also can't argue that my feeble noodle arms wouldn't break apart like a twig upon the attempt to open such old, rickety windows.

All jokes aside, this article showcases some of the earlier forms of replacement window marketing. It argues that "old style" windows were "good but generally too complicated or expensive". Interesting to see the same rhetoric as contemporary replacement companies even back in 1925.

Happy New Year from our little group of window preservationists to yours!

We started off the holiday season this year by challenging ourselves to a little workshop on stained glass creation. We hope to continue to grow and challenge ourselves in 2022!

One of Tim's most complex puzzles yet: a pair of curved casement windows to fit into a curved bay that juts out of a grand house in the garden district. So far, they look lovely!
