Oui oui! A pair of built-in “French armoires” flank the doorway in this bedroom shared by two brothers. Designed by LKI, this cabinetry is another prime example of custom built-ins cleverly made to look like furniture.

We love this design hack for lots of reasons. For one, adding two traditional closets would have made the room feel considerably smaller. Historically, many New Orleans homes were built without closets, with armoires serving as a more flexible storage solution. And with our high humidity, storing clothing in a wooden armoire allowed for better air circulation than a damp, enclosed closet. In tandem, this design choice nods to our city’s French roots and historic approach to storage.

Updated and upgraded! We love how our clients’ new kitchen turned out as part of this whole-home historic renovation. The floor plan was reconfigured and the kitchen relocated to create better flow; now perfectly positioned between the breakfast nook and dining room.

A new side entrance adds even more convenience, especially when it’s time to unload the groceries.

At our historic reno in the Garden District, the unused space beneath the staircase on the main floor was transformed into the sweetest lil powder room. Because the masonry wall supporting the staircase was load-bearing, creating the room required some pretty extensive work. We also shifted the side entry doorway slightly to recenter it in the space once the new powder room wall was added.
