Our next feature is another corner of a downtown New Orleans intersection that Gibbs helped transform into one of the city's most vibrant entertainment destinations.

Through a design-build contract, Gibbs revitalized 16,000 SF of two adjoined circa-1876 historic structures—abandoned after Hurricane Katrina—to house three distinct concepts: Walk-On's Bistreaux & Bar, Happy's Irish Pub, and The Roux House on the second floor. Highlights include a reclaimed cypress bar top with poured-in-place epoxy finish, self-service tabletop beer taps, and a 160-linear-foot wrought iron French Quarter gallery balcony wrapping two sides of the building.

Five years ago, two builders joined the Gibbs team and have been making their mark on our region ever since.

Elliott Sauvinet (left) came to us in 2021 with nearly 15 years of experience on some of the most complex federal projects in the country, from DHS headquarters campuses to Pentagon infrastructure upgrades. Since joining Gibbs, he's brought that same precision and partnership to projects right here at home, including Xavier University's Living Learning Center and St. Martin de Porres Repairs. Elliott's ability to navigate fast-paced, technically demanding work makes him an invaluable construction partner for owners and design teams alike.

Gentry George (right) joined us fresh out of UTC's Civil Engineering program, stepping into preconstruction before moving into operations and earning his promotion to Project Manager in 2023. In just a few years, he's taken on progressively complex work, from the Brother Martin Batting Facility to Kenner's first-ever CMAR fire station. Gentry's attention to detail and clear communication keep every stakeholder on the same page from groundbreaking to ribbon cutting.

Elliott and Gentry, thank you for the expertise, the dedication, and the energy you bring to our team every day. Here's to five years and many more. 👏

Gibbs Construction is proud — and a little sad! — to celebrate the retirement of Senior Project Manager Jimmy Wehrlin, a cherished member of the Gibbs family since 1989.

After rejoining us following Hurricane Katrina, Jimmy was a driving force in our rebuilding efforts for the St. Bernard Parish School Board. Over 20 years, his expertise, generous spirit, and dedication to our community have left a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to work alongside him.

Thank you, Jimmy — we wish you a retirement as rewarding as the incredible career you've built! 👏

Our next stop on the tour takes us to the lakefront campus of the University of New Orleans, where Gibbs Construction helped shape the alumni experience with a landmark facility.

The Homer L. Hitt Alumni and Visitors Center (2003) is a 17,000 SF two-story steel structure featuring the Geoghegan Grand Ballroom, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing sweeping views of Lake Pontchartrain. Connected to two existing brick buildings, the project incorporated a World War II-era smoke stack, the last remaining piece of the Naval Air Station that existed on the site previously.

Today we pause and pay tribute to those who died while protecting the United States of America. We thank the women and men who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our nation and hold their loved ones in our thoughts.

Our office is closed today to allow our team to spend the holiday with their families and friends in gratitude and recognition of these individuals.

Reaching new heights—literally ✈️ As we continue our tour through five decades of landmark construction, we're looking up at one of the most recognizable structures on the New Orleans skyline: the FAA Air Traffic Control Tower at Moisant Airport, now Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

Standing 207 feet tall, this tower has guided aircraft safely in and out of New Orleans for more than 30 years—and it's still the same tower in use today.

Among the engineering milestones: on June 26, 1992, Gibbs poured the largest single pile cap in company history at the time—450 yards of 6,000 PSI concrete, placed in a single pour using a 117-foot concrete boom truck. Shortly after, crews began setting 92 precast concrete modules, each weighing 18 tons, stacking them into four columns rising 180 feet high.

Every flight that lands in New Orleans passes under the watchful eye of a tower Gibbs built.

Fifteen years ago, Nick Williamson joined Gibbs' U.S. Custom House project as a college intern. Today, he's one of our most respected Senior Project Managers — and one of the best mentors on our team.

Over his career at Gibbs, Nick has led landmark projects like redevelopment of a full city block on Magazine Street and the award-winning restoration of Entergy's Claiborne Substation, all while investing in the next generation of builders around him.

Today he's leading our Bonella A. St. Ville School project in Harvey, bringing to life the incredible vision of our partners Jefferson Parish Schools, Lachin Darre' Architects, and Volkert.

Nick, thank you for your commitment, your leadership, and for making everyone around you better. 👏
