Every finished project has a story you’ll never see.
The photos only show the end result.
They don’t show the months of work that happened before the camera ever came out. The meetings. The site visits. The measuring. The design revisions. The samples. The emails. The phone calls. The countless hours spent trying to take someone else’s vision and make it a reality.
And they definitely don’t show the projects that never happen.
For every project we build, there are probably ten others that we invest hours into that simply don’t pan out. Sometimes the budget changes. Sometimes we get ghosted. Sometimes they choose someone else.
And honestly, that’s probably the hardest part.
You invest your time because you believe in the project. You pour your experience into the design. Then one day…the communication just stops.
Every now and then I’ll see the finished project online, completed by someone else. It isn’t what the client originally asked us for. It isn’t even close to the vision we worked on together. So I can’t help but wonder what happened.
People often assume that because you’re self-employed, you’re doing well.
The truth is, most legitimate small businesses are simply trying to do things the right way. We carry insurance. We pay our taxes. We invest in quality tools and equipment. We spend years learning our craft. We stand behind our work. We answer emails after hours, work weekends, and wear every hat in the company because there isn’t anyone else to do it.
I’ve said it for years…
“Running your own business is not for the faint of heart.”
This isn’t meant to be a pity post.
…Although, if I’m being honest, maybe it is just a little. It’s been a tough stretch lately.
But if there’s one thing I’d ask of anyone considering a custom project, it’s this…
Please keep talking to us.
If the proposal is over budget, tell us.
If your priorities changed, tell us.
If you’re considering someone else, tell us.
Don’t assume the conversation has to end because the first design doesn’t fit the budget.
One of the things I enjoy most is solving problems. We can often simplify a design, change materials, phase a project over time, or find another solution that gets you much closer to your budget while still giving you something beautiful.
But we can only do that if we know where you stand.
Communication gives us the opportunity to help.
At the end of the day, I still love what I do. I love taking an idea and turning it into something that will become part of someone’s home for years to come.
The finished photos are beautiful but they’re only the last chapter of the story.
So today, I’ll unlock the shop, pour a cup of coffee, and start writing the next one.
