For decades, the majestic American Elm was one of New York Cityโs signature trees โ until Dutch Elm Disease (DED) devastated the population in the late 20th century. Today, through ongoing monitoring, advanced treatment methods, and the dedication of arborists and park officials, these iconic trees are making a remarkable comeback.
Almstead is proud to be part of that effort by inoculating American Elm trees throughout New York City against Dutch Elm Disease using DutchTrigยฎ, an organic and biological control treatment. This innovative vaccine contains spores of a specific strain of Verticillium fungus that stimulates the elmโs natural defense system, helping the tree resist infection from the DED fungus.
The treatment is administered through a handheld microinjection system designed to deliver the vaccine directly into the tree with minimal impact to the surrounding tissue. When combined with regular monitoring and proactive care, this approach can play an important role in preserving valuable elm trees for future generations.
If you have elm trees on your property, contact your Almstead arborist to schedule an inspection and discuss whether preventive Dutch Elm Disease treatment is recommended.
