Feb 12 | Drought conditions continue to worsen and expand across east central Florida, with moderate to extreme drought now covering much of the area. An increase in rainfall is forecast Sunday into Monday (Feb 15-16), but is unlikely to provide any significant drought relief.

After the coldest temps we’ve seen in years, many palms around town are looking a little rough. 🌴 If your palm has frost damage you may notice browning fronts, wilted or collapsed tips, yellowing that appears a week or two after the freeze, or slow/stalled growth as the weather warms. 🌞

The biggest thing to check is the spear (the newest center leaf). If it’s firm, that’s a great sign. If it’s soft or mushy, the palm may need extra attention. 🥶

Here are your next steps 💚:
- Resist the urge to trim everything off right away. Even damaged fronds help protect the crown and continue supplying energy while the plant recovers.
- Cold stress can disrupt nutrient uptake. Apply a Palm Nutritional Spray to deliver essential micronutrients.
- Apply Root Stimulator to encourage healthy root recovery and development.
- F-Stop to prevent and treat fungal infections your stressed palm may up.

Pictured is a Cold Hardy Coconut Palm that experienced slight damage to the fronds, but is actually completely healthy and will put out fresh new growth this spring. If you’re unsure about your palm’s condition, bring us a photo or stop by. We’re happy to help you create a recovery plan and get your landscape thriving again! 🌴

Despite the cold weather, there are many kinds of flowers that can be planted this season. Just be sure to cover for freezes and frost. With the proper care, this spring you will be delighted with some wonderful blooms.

For the PDF and text version of this infographic, visit the UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions website https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/infographics-collection/flowers-to-plant-in-february/

*Generally, if planting at the beginning of the season, you can plant by seed. If planting towards the end, you can use transplants. However, each plant varies in its success as a transplant or seed, so check with your local county UF/IFAS Extension agent for more information on planting in your area.

This doesn’t happen often, but we do get freezes! ❄️ If your plants were affected by the hard freeze we just experienced, here are a few helpful tips:

💧• Water your plants thoroughly if you haven’t already.
🌿• For mushy, wet tissue, prune it back to firm, healthy material.

If your plants only have brown or dried foliage or woody tissue, don’t rush to prune just yet. Leaving it in place can actually help protect the plant if more cold weather is on the way.

✂️ When to prune:
Pruning is best done once temperatures begin staying in the 40s or higher, or you can wait until spring when new growth appears. At that point, it’s much easier to see where to prune above a bud or node.

🌴 For tropical plants (such as papaya and banana):
Remove any mushy, wet tissue. If everything appears dry, no action is needed right now — just keep an eye on it. You should see a clear line between living and dead tissue.

⚠️ Be careful not to over-prune!
Dead, brown stems can help protect healthy tissue below if we get another cold snap.

Landscapes across Brevard County may look a little rough until spring arrives — and that’s okay. 🌼 That’s just part of gardening in Florida after a freeze!
