One of the best streamside waterfall hikes in New York is the Buttermilk Falls Gorge & Rim Trail, a short but unforgettable loop through Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca. The walk starts near the park’s famous 165-foot waterfall, where Buttermilk Creek pours down a wide rock face into a natural swimming area below. From there, the Gorge Trail climbs beside the creek, leading you past rushing cascades, narrow chutes, smooth rock slides, deep pools, and tall stone walls that make the whole route feel tucked away from the world.

Stone stairways and footbridges keep you close to the water as the gorge rises toward the upper section of the park. Buttermilk Creek drops about 600 feet as it cuts down the slope toward Cayuga Lake, which is how the park got its name...the foamy water looks a little like buttermilk as it tumbles through the gorge. After the climb, the Rim Trail brings you back through quiet woods with views over the gorge and out toward Cayuga Lake. In only about 1.6 miles, this hike gives you a swimming hole, steep gorge walls, shaded forest, stone steps, creekside scenery, and waterfall after waterfall packed into one beautiful Finger Lakes trail.
