Manitoga also known as Dragon Rock is the home and studio of industrial designer Russel Wright and Mary Einstein Wright. The materiality and detailing are stunning — stone, wood, glass all working in harmony with the landscape.

It’s clearly the home of a designer: every element is considered, expressive, and deeply tied to nature. A true design gem.

was lucky enough to stay at the & join a tour led by Bruce Becker that walked us through the project. We appreciated the smallest details that contributed to this mission: such as the filtered water coolers located in elevator lobbies on all floors – could choose from flat or sparkling, a embedded in a wooden cube rather than a pamphlet to provide suggestions for local tourist attractions & high quality bath toiletries in refillable bottles in the bathrooms.

Here are our recommendations for the best spots for seeing the beautiful details that carefully restored:
Ā· Fire stairs – one of the most beautiful stairs we have seen - a combination of stone treads, wood handrails, board-form concrete and natural light from windows.
Ā· A view from any window – allows you to see the material of the faƧade which are precast concrete panels with an exposed heavy aggregate developed as a sunshade to reduce the amount of direct sunlight that would enter the building. This was quite prescient since typically uses this technique as part of reducing the solar gain from the sun. The recent renovation elaborated on this design by adding wooden window surrounds with a reveal for tracking internal sun and blackout shades. The entire assembly is elegant and worth noticing.
Ā· The upper floors consist of a four-story volume suspended from cantilevered trusses. These can be seen on the 9th floor and are also expressed on the building’s faƧade.

is the only certified passive house in the
Hotels are one of the most energy intensive building types due to their 24/7 nature of operations. The constant demands for heating, cooling, lighting and operating amenities such as pools, restaurants, gyms, conference rooms, and laundry to cater to guests’ comfort leads to substantially higher energy consumption compared to other building types.

is paving the way for a new approach to running an hotel šŸØ it has abandoned the use of by electrifying everything, has reduced its need to use energy by designing it to meet standards, and produces all its power on site with renewable energy sources. Equally important is that it is a beautiful renovation by Becker & Becker of an iconic building designed by
